About us
INFORMATION IN ENGLISCH
This is the webserver of a professional teachers' organisation in Bavaria, Germany.
As its contents are mainly designed to provide special information for teachers and students in Bavaria, all texts but this one are only available in German.
The Bayerischer Philologenverband provides several services for its members (i.e. provides them with publications about schoolaffairs, special insurances for teachers, ...) and above all represents the interests of its members towards all relevant groups of society, in particular towards the Kultusministerium (Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs) If you have special questions about our organisation (and especially if you do not understand the German texts) just mail to bpv@bpv.de .
For a general survey read the following text:
Most members of the Bayerischer Philologenverband are teachers at a Gymnasium. A Gymnasium is one of three alternative tiers of the secondary sector of general education in Bavaria, geared to the pupils' different levels of ability.
Any Gymnasium (comparable to the British grammar school) is a general-education secondary school comprising secondary levels I + II. It takes the end of the Year 4 of Grundschule as its starting point and comprises Years 5 to 13 inclusive. It provides an academically orientated general education that is indispensible for future university students, but it also offers preparation for vocational training outside the Universities. The final examination at the end of Year 13, called Abitur, leads to the General University Entrance Certificate (Allgemeine Hochschulreife) .
To become a teacher at a Gymnasium
you first have to finish a special course at a university which normally includes two subjects and some basic teachers' training. The final examination is set by the state (1. Staatsexamen). After that you have to do a two year period of post-graduate teacher training (teachers' education) called the Referendariat, leading to another state exam (2. Staatsexamen). During that stage members of the Bayerischer Philologenverband are assisted by the Referendarvertretung (rjv@bpv.de), which represents them within the Bayerischer Philologenverband.
Education in Bavaria
is based on a number of different types of school depending on the students` skills and abilities (i.e. Gymnasium, Realschule, Hauptschule...). Almost all of these schools are organized as separate schools whereas in other countries these various types are often considered as different courses within a larger educational institution (comprehensive schools). As the Federal Republic of Gemany consists of 16 Länder, or Federal States (one of them is Bavaria), and as each Land is autonomous in educational and cultural affairs, the educational systems differ widely within Germany.
